Manchester United has contacted Ajax coach Erik ten Hag regarding the vacant manager's position.
Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in November, Ralf Rangnick has been acting as temporary manager.
Old Trafford is emphasizing that it is too early to talk about favorites for the job, despite the club's desire to complete the process as quickly as possible.
Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Paris Saint-Germain, is also on the shortlist.
Rangnick is named interim manager of Manchester United.
Julen Lopetegui, the coach of Sevilla, has admirers at United, as does Luis Enrique, the coach of Spain, though the chances of him agreeing to take a club post before the World Cup later this year are regarded to be slim.
Uniteisre keeping an eye on the situation at Chelsea, despite the fact that German manager Thomas Tuchel has made no public indication that he is considering leaving the club, despite their current dilemma, with owner Roman Abramovich sanctioned and the club up for sale.
Ten Hag, like Pochettino of Argentina, has a contract that runs through 2023.
That is unlikely to be an issue if United decides the 52-year-old Dutchman is the ideal guy for the job.
Ten Hag has been with Ajax since December 2017 and led them to within a minute of reaching the Champions League final in 2019 before Lucas Moura's historic goal for Tottenham.
The fact that many of the Ajax players have not gone on to have similar success elsewhere is a testament to his coaching ability.
Ajax won the Dutch league title in 2019 and 2021, and they now lead PSV Eindhoven by two points.
With Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, and Juan Mata all out of contract, whomever takes the United job will have a busy summer.
Pogba was depressed following the Mourinho squabble.
Furthermore, the futures of several senior players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, are unknown, albeit it is unclear who would be willing to take on the 37-year-astronomical old's pay.
Rangnick is expected to stay at Old Trafford for another two years as a consultant after the season ends.
Ten Hag, who previously worked in the Bundesliga, has stated that he "loves the German model" of sporting directors collaborating closely with first-team coaches.

'I think Ten Hag is a larger risk than Pochettino,' says the manager.
Pochettino succeeded Tuchel as PSG manager in January 2021, but the club missed out on the French league title last season, despite winning the Coupe de France, which was the former Tottenham and Southampton manager's first major honor in management.
PSG, however, failed to reach the quarter-finals this season after losing 3-2 to Real Madrid after finishing second in the Champions League in 2020 and being beaten semi-finalists the previous season.
PSG players were booed during a 3-0 home win over Bordeaux before falling 3-0 at Monaco on Sunday, their fourth loss in six games in all competitions.
Is Pochettino's exit from the Champions League the end of his career?
In Ligue 1, they still lead second-placed Marseille by 12 points, but Pochettino stated after Sunday's setback that "There is a sense of sports shame. It can't be done again. We may still lose games, but what happened should not be repeated "...
Julien Laurens, a French football expert, told BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues podcast: "Ralf Rangnick is aware that his bond with Erik ten Hag will be very strong due to their shared history and existing relationship, as opposed to Pochettino, who may not want him there and whom he does not know.
"Ten Hag, in my opinion, is a larger risk and gamble than Pochettino.
"It may be someone else, but I'm sticking with Pochettino because he knows the league and has somewhat more Premier League experience than Erik ten Hag. That must give him an advantage."
